Yarg! WOTC’s ship has leaks in it (several, actually). Over the past few weeks there have been tons of non-official spoilers rolling out foiling the opportunity for WOTC to present the cards the way they want them initially announced.

I’m here to talk about a new mono-red that was spoiled today via the leaks of two images that were leaked to Imgur (here and here). These are not confirmed spoilers, but they seem pretty real.

To hard to read? Here is the unofficial text on this unofficial card:

Captain Lannery Storm (2)R

Legendary Creature – Human Pirate

Whenever Captain Lannery Storm attacks, create a colorless treasure artifact token with “(tap), sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.”

Whenever you sacrifice a treasure, Captain Lannery Storm gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

Card Analysis

Pirates are coming back with Ixalan and I am personally glad that mono-red is getting its second pirate commander, after Kari Zev, Skyship Raider.

What I like about Lannery Storm is that he’s helps mono-red ramp. Traditionally mono-red does not have a lot of options for ramping outside of artifacts or rituals, so its cool to see WOTC give us a commander who gives us consistent ramp as long as Lannery can attack someone.

Lannery Storm has haste, so attacking with him no turn three will give you a treasure chest (which is very akin to a Lotus Petal). On turn four if you attack before casting spells during your second main phase you’ll get another treasure chest – bringing you up to a total of 6 mana provided you have your 4th land drop. Being able to cast a 6 drop on turn four consistently sounds decent.

There is a lot of potential for a ramping commander like Lannery – you could choose to run traditional artifact ramp alongside him and ramp into powerful artifacts. I’ve built a bad mono-red eldrazi deck in the past but with Lannery ramping me each turn I think a mono-red eldrazi deck paired with normal artifact ramp could work.

If you want to rumble into the red zone you can obviously include a equipment package. It helps that whenever you sacrifice a treasure, Lannery gets +1/+0 until end of turn so you can buff Lannery as he gets equipped with powerful weapons like Umezawa’s Jitte and Sword of Fire and Ice.

Choosing a more aggressive build can also give you access to strange red creatures that eat or use artifacts like Atog, Megatog, Ferrovore, Salivating Gremlins, Ravenous Intruder, Pia and Kiran Nalaar, and Pia Nalaar. These cards thrive by eating artifacts and Lannery is a consistent way for us to feed them artifacts and ramp when we need to.

Its cool to see dinosaurs and pirates coming out of Ixalan and I can’t wait to see if there are other pirates for each color and to see if what I thought was a legendary merfolk in the Imgur spoiler above is real or not.

What will the other pirates do? Will Ghost Ship get a reprint? Will Skeleton Ship be eratta’ed? Will they print a pirate ship artifact that has the Crew ability? Ixalan is getting me hyped up a little.
